Erixx – Regional Trains in Lower Saxony

Erixx trains connect the large cities Hamburg, Hannover and Bremen as well as the scenic Harz mountains, with a network of convenient regional trains that stop at many of the small towns in the state. They have special ticket offers like the Niedersachsenkarte. It costs € 29 for two persons for a whole day of traveling including public transportation in the cities. Up to three additional adults can be added to the ticket for € 4 each, up to 3 children are free. So let’s explore Lower Saxony!

Wilsede, a Quaint Village

A beautiful way to experience both nature and the history of the area is a hike in the Luneburger Heide nature preserve. From the village Niederhaverbeck you walk 3.5 km to Wilseder Berg, the highest elevation in the area. On a clear day you can see Hamburg from the top. After this it’s only 1.5 km to the village Wilsede. Here you can find a number of cafés and restaurants. We chose the Gasthaus zum Heidemuseum. You are invited to try Buchweizentorte, a traditional cream cake made with buckwheat flour and cranberries, totally delicious, On your hike you might see a shepherd with his flock of sheep. In August the heather is in bloom and the whole landscape turns purple. This is the prime tourist season so it can be quite busy. At other times of year it’s also very beautiful and you have the place almost to yourself. Recently we went on a lovely afternoon in late October, returning at dusk and were rewaded with a gorgeous sunset.20181031_170048

It’s possible to make the trip on foot, by bike or horse carriage, no cars allowed!

What to see in Stralsund

Stralsund is a town on Germany’s Baltic coast in the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was founded in 1234 and has many beautiful old buildings like the 13th century Town Hall. The Ozeaneum aquarium has tanks recreating the habitats of Baltic Sea and the North Sea,  plus a penguin pool and a cool whale display. In the harbor you can see the Gorch Fock 1, a 1933 tall ship. So if you are in the area stop in Stralsund and go for a stroll. It has a lot to offer.

Great Shopping – Soltau Designer Outlet Center

Whenever I visit Soltau I always like to include a trip to the Designer Outlet Center. Easy to reach, take exit Soltau Ost if you are traveling on the A7. The Center has over 80 designer brand stores and 5 restaurants and coffee shops!
